Kerrick Sports Sedan Series stalwart Phil Crompton is making his comeback to the series this weekend at Queensland Raceway, as part of round three of the 2015 championship.
Crompton has been kept away from the sport he loves due to a knee reconstruction – last racing in the Series on November 1 of last year with his only other track-time coming as part of Bruce Henley’s Mazda RX8 Bathurst 12 Hour campaign.
“November was my last time in the car and I was comfortable then, this morning, I was not so comfortable!” laughed Crompton following the first of two practice sessions.
“I did Bathurst in February in the Mazda and then the week after my knee gave way. They did surgery and told me that I would be right in a few weeks, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case.
“It seems to be okay now, it hasn’t bothered me this morning so that’s a good sign.
“We were also held up when it came to Winton waiting for new cycldinder heads for the engine, however I didn’t bother pushing it as my knee wasn’t quite right.
“The cylinder heads actually got finished last Friday, but we already had another engine in the car and will run that this weekend – we had a few little issues this morning, nothing internal, just electronic elements and we should be right moving forward.”
Despite his time out of the seat, Crompton is feeling confident of being in contention this weekend.
“I think we will be pretty competitive, we should be able to keep up with Kerry (Baily) and Steven (Tamasi) and that is our aim, and we will see what Thomas (Randle), Jack (Perkins) and Tony (Ricciardello) get up too,” said Crompton, who thanked new sponsors Lennon Engineering and continuing sponsors Thermal Edge, Hart Transmissions and Moonbi Oil Traders for their support.
“The car is a little bit more aerodynamically efficient and it felt good this morning on what were really bad tyres - they were the tyres from November of last year and I was slipping and sliding everywhere!”
“The power is pretty good and we’ve made some improvements to the front suspension since last year - the car felt a lot better and I see no reason why we can’t be more competitive than we were last year, the question is whether the others are as well, who knows?
“We had a pretty good run here last year, and we’re hoping for a bit more. The big unknown is this engine but it seems to be okay so far.”
The Kerrick Sports Sedan Series field ran two unofficial practice sessions today, with both sessions topped by Jack Perkins in the #4 Auto Union Deutsch Audi A4 ahead of eight-time and reigning champion Tony Ricciardello.
