This weekend at the fifth round of the Shannons Nationals, the third round of the Kerrick Sports Sedan Series features a strong 30-car entry, the biggest in several years.
For 2012 preseason favourites Tony Ricciardello and Darren Hossack, it will be do or die this weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park (formerly Eastern Creek Raceway) if they want to have any chance of winning the series. Ricciardello (Alfa/Chev) and Hossack (Audi/Chev) have had ordinary starts in their bids for another title trophy for their mantelpieces, both having to borrow cars at round one and then encountering mechanical issues at round two.
In the meantime Kerry Baily and his new category showpiece, the Chev-powered Aston Martin, have been exemplary in establishing a handy 66 point lead after five wins and a second in the six races (two rounds) contested this year. Second at the moment is Des Wall in the Corvette after three seconds at round one and two top five placings at Phillip Island. Michael Robinson maintained his consistency for third in the series while Shane Bradford's third overall at the last outing has lifted him to fourth.
Other strong contenders for podium placings include the Chev-powered Calibras of Daniel Tamasi, David McGinniss and Chris Jackson, the similarly powered Dameon Jameson (Jaguar), Jeff Barnes (Pontiac), Geoff Whittaker (Commodore), Michael Robinson and Colin Smith (Monaros) and Anthony Macready (Nissan).
The technically-different but similarly paced Trans Am class will see Wall and Bradford joined by Scott Reed's new Ford Mustang, and the Chev Corvettes of Charlie Senese which missed round two and the Corvette Dean Camm which failed to score points at round one after a first race accident.
There is also a strong contingent of local state sports sedan competitors that will not only continue their local rivalry but put a scare or two into the national runners' weekend plans.
Aussie Sports Sedans allows more freedoms than any other tin top category in the country, have been competing nationally since 1975, and can number among its winners such names as Allan Moffat, Frank Gardner, Allan Grice, Tony Edmondson and Allan Jones. Ricciardello is the most prolific winner with seven titles; Baily has five series trophies and Hossack two.
The Kerrick Sports Sedans are set to hit the island circuit for three sessions of practice on Friday July 13 and two 20 minute qualifying sessions on Saturday July 14 at 9:30am and 12:15pm, leading up to three ten-lap races on Sunday July 15 at 9:35am, 11:25am and 2:00pm.
