NOISY END CAUSES SERIES UPHEAVAL

EXCESSIVE NOISE FOR Kerrick Australian Sports Sedan Series leader Kerry Baily at Phillip Island could well cost the Chev-powered Aston Martin driver his seventh title. He came into the round with a 40-point buffer but was forced out of the second of three races and not allowed to start the third.

With a round to go the defending title holder has dropped to fourth spot, 40 points adrift of new series leader Bruce Banks who was also the round winner ahead of Daniel Tamasi in his Holden Calivra and the Holden Commodore Chev of Bob McLoughlin.

From Tasmania, Banks had been racing a leased Chev Camaro in the previous rounds but was back at the helm of his Mazda RX7 for this one. “It is a harder to drive. You just put your foot down and the Chev wants to go, not with the Mazda. But we spent a lot of time rebuilding this car and I like to be racing something a little different,” he said.

Excessive noise also ruled out Darren Hossack and Audi A4/Chev which was the fastest qualifying at sub-lap record pace, while seven-time series victor Tony Ricciardello had loose front bodywork put pay to him capitalising on his rivals’ misfortunes.

Series second after three rounds, Shane Bradford looked to benefit but his Chev Camaro speared off at Lukey Heights during race two. He still maintains second in the title chase while Ricciardello moves up one spot to third.

Tamasi also had his dramas. A chronic headache forced him to miss the first race and he started off the back of the second race, to finish second before taking the win in the third. McLoughlin was well pleased with his third overall. “I feel for those guys that had all the issues, but sometimes thinks go your way and I think it was about time it happened to me,” he said.

Hossack led the first race on a drying track for the most part until Ricciardello got by on the last lap. Bradford was third ahead of Baily, Banks and the Monaro/Chev of Michael Robinson. Dameon Jameson (Jaguar XKR/Chev) was black flagged in error, the timekeepers adamant that he had not come under starters orders, which he clearly did.

After Hossack and Baily were forced out of the second race (and the rest of the meeting) Ricciardello was left to cross the line first, despite wayward bodywork. Behind second place Tamasi was Banks with Dean Camm (Chev Corvette) fourth just in front of McLoughlin and the Monaro/Chev of Colin Smith.

Ricciardello had the same issues in race three, this time not finishing as Tamasi took the win ahead of Bradford and Robinson. Banks and Corvette driver Charlie Senese were next after vying for the lead in the early stages.
