LUCK PLAYED ITS part at the third round of the Kerrick Australian Sports Sedan Series staged at Queensland Raceway as part of the Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals last weekend. It didn’t go with Darren Hossack in race one on the Saturday but did on Sunday, whilst for Tony Ricciardello it worked the other way.
While he admitted he couldn’t have beaten Ricciardello in the opening race when the lead changed hands due to lapped traffic, Hossack bounced back with a solid second in the second race before taking a comprehensive win in the last driving the John Gourlay-owned Auto Union Deutache Audi/Chev V8.
“It is so good to get through the meeting without problems and getting the lap record was great,” beamed Hossack after claiming the round win over Kerry Baily and Shane Bradford who also took the Trans Am class-with-the-category Trans Am.
Meanwhile Ricciardello who had won race two, breaking the lap record three times in three consecutive laps, led the last until, of all things, loose bodywork force the B&M Ricciardello Alfa/Chev into the pits to rectify. He would ultimately re-join one lap down and finish eleventh.
Defending title holder Baily and his Aston Martin/Chev in the Sunday morning race where Daniel Tamasi spun his Calibra/Chev into the sand at Turn 2. That brought about a safety car and the battle of the Chev Camaros for fourth resolved on the final lap with Bruce Banks getting past Bradford.
After failing to finish race one, due to an oil seal popping off the front of the Ford Mustang’s engine, Phil Crompton worked his way to sixth from the back of the grid, getting past Anthon Cox’s Saab/Chev, Colin Smith (Holden Monaro/Chev), Bob McLoughlin (Commodore/Chev), Charlie Senese (Chev Corvette) and the Nissan turbo-powered Commodore.
Ricciardello led the last until his bodywork issue and that allowed the challenging Hossack through to victory with Baily taking second ahead of Bradford, Banks, Crompton, Tamasi and Cox.
Michael Robinson (Monaro/Chev) saw off the challenge of the Commodore/Chev of Bob McLoughlin when it expired, and after pitting, Ricciardello re-joined to finish eleventh, one lap down on the winner.
